Henry J. Dietrich (1918-2000) was born Heinz Otto Joseph Lewin in Berlin near Tiergarten. After a harrowing early life that included a pre-war flight to Shanghai, he settled in San Francisco in 1948 to create cartoons for the San Francisco Chronicle. During this time, he worked as an independent artist, showing and selling paintings in galleries all over the West Coast. By personal choice, however, Dietrich kept most of his creations in his own collection. By the time of his death, it’s estimated that he had created about 500 paintings, most of which survive today in private collections.

This one-of-a-kind painting was made by Towan, Woodland Park Zoo’s oldest male orangutan, in March 2010 specifically for Call to the Wild. Towan is a 42-year-old orangutan who weighs over 300 pounds and has a wingspan of 7 feet. He is an accomplished artist who uses paint-filled pens and chalk to create his works, including this unique commissioned piece. The zookeepers report that painting is one of Towan’s favorite activities, and he’ll often spend up to two hours on a piece. Please note that this particular work has embellishment on both sides of the canvas! The accompanying photos show Towan working on this very piece of art.
