Yukon, the Red-Tailed Hawk
Educational Ambassador

OrionIn 2010, the West Sound Wildlife Shelter became home to a beautiful red-tailed hawk. Yukon, the Shelter’s newest educational ambassador, is a Harlan’s Red-tailed hawk, a subspecies that breeds along the Yukon River in Alaska and Canada. These hawks often spend the winter in warmer areas, which is probably how Yukon came to be in the Pacific Northwest.

He was found by caring people who came across him after he’d been struck by a car on Highway 16.

Yukon’s wing was fractured and had to be pinned, but it didn’t heal well enough to allow him to surive in the wild. Because he was a young hawk with a calm temperament, the Shelter’s wildlife staff determined that he would be a successful educational raptor.

After a great deal of practice sitting on the glove, Yukon made his debut as an educational ambassador at Call to the Wild, the Shelter’s annual auction in April 2010.
Welcome, Yukon!
