About the Owl
The barred owl that needs a name came to the Shelter in March of 2007 with a broken coracoid, a bone in her breast. About one year old at the time, she was found starving and emaciated in a field in Port Orchard. Shelter staff are nearly certain that she had been hit by a car and left injured and unable to feed herself for some time before she was brought to the Shelter.
After spending considerable time in rehabilitation at the Shelter, it became clear that she would never be able to fly well enough to survive in the wild. At that point, by law, the Shelter either had to euthanize the owl or place her in an education program.
A primary factor in a decision to place a wild animal in an education program is how stressed the animal will be when forced to interact with humans. “Due in large part to the owl’s lack of fear of people,” said Mike Pratt, the Shelter’s Director of Wildlife Services, “we decided that she’d do well in an education program. In the owl world, barred owls are generally less afraid of humans than other owls. But this barred owl is particularly unfazed by humans.”
