The Ultimate Sacrifice
raccoons

The baby raccoons at play in their enclosure.

Last spring, caring people brought us a difficult case.  A mother raccoon had been hit by a car and was found alongside her babies.  The rescuers brought the whole family in, and while the babies seemed healthy, the prospects for the mother's survival were grim.

Through sheer force of will, the mother raccoon held on long enough to teach her babies an important life lesson -- not to trust humans.  She died, but she left behind a family of young that were truly wild in every sense of the word.  These babies kept the animal caretakers on their toes until they were released later that year.
